New (Healthy) Ways of Thinking
Dr. Cara Alana
Last week I shared about Amber who went through a medical crisis before realizing that her life lacked purpose. It was apparent that Amber was living for the approval of others. Through the years she felt a longing to incorporate more into her life, but put herself last behind her husband, her children, her friends and her home. She felt as if there was always time for herself later on. It took cancer to make Amber stop in her tracks and truly evaluate her life. She began to look at life completely differently. She was now a survivor and had survived for a reason. She was intent on finding out what this reason was.
When we began our coaching sessions, we talked about new ways of thinking that must replace the old. We made two lists ~ one with Amber’s current beliefs and one which reframed them into ones that could welcome her transformation.
Amber’s old (unhealthy) ways of thinking:
I like to feel loved and appreciated so I will give myself to others.
I am busy taking care of my family and it makes me feel good.
I can delay my own desires for now so that my family will be happy.
Amber’s new (healthy) ways of thinking:
I must make time for myself to recognize what I want and need.
I can feel loved and appreciated by taking care of me and being me.
I will be honest with who I am and what I truly want.
This list transformed Amber’s life. Her crisis led her to discovering what she wanted for her life; all that was lacking. Crisis does that ~ it makes us take a good, hard look at ourselves. If we are lucky enough to survive our crisis, we would be neglectful if we did not take that opportunity to identify our place in this world.
To your fulfillment,
Cara
