Reading is Fundamental
Jenifer Madson
I strongly suggest that you seek out great sources of financial information, for the sake of your continued growth in this area, and I don’t always mean just the Wall Street Journal or Money Magazine. Sometimes inspiring money messages come from less than predictable sources.
Take the book I’m currently studying, “Influencer.” It’s not a personal finance book per se, but the moment I saw the subtitle, “The Power to Change Anything,” I wondered what the content could mean for people who want to change their financial state. Here’s what I’ve gotten so far:
The book clearly emphasizes the need to identify vital behaviors for success. So I thought about the scores of people I’ve worked with on money matters, and came to the conclusion that two of the vital behaviors for financial success are talking and tracking; opening up about what’s really happening financially, in an effort to improve, and tracking results to gauge your progress.
The book goes on to say that if you want to change your behavior, you first have to change the “public discourse,” or conversation you’re having on the subject. This means we not only need to embrace the idea of talking about money in general, but that we also have to specifically break from a “Why can’t I…?” mentality and start talking more about “How can I…?”
In addition to identifying the vital behaviors, the authors tell us we need to answer two critical questions:
· Is it worth it? (to adapt the behaviors)
· Can I do it? (adapt them successfully)
In light of this, I encourage you to ask yourself, “Is it worth it to start talking out loud about my real financial state and to track my progress?” and, “Can I do it?” In other words, what is the real benefit to talking about and tracking your money, and do you know how to do so or at least have the capacity to learn?
When I know my answers to “worth it” and “can do it,” anything seems possible, because knowing them gives me the power to push on; I feel secure that I either know the answers or know where to get them, and I’m off to find the help I need. I wish the same for you!
Abundant Regards,
Jenifer
