Easily Offended?
Shawn Byler
Being offended is a way to express a belief in your own powerlessness…
Do you live life “looking to be offended”? I’m sure you’ll answer no. But in fact, most people constantly seek out opportunities to be offended. It seems strange, I know. Who would ever seek opportunities to feel offended, it’s counter-productive, counter-intuitive, and downright frustrating, but none-the-less a reality.
In the coming weeks, we’ll look at examples of “looking to be offended”, talk about how being offended is distracting and lowers performance and productivity, how we use feeling offended is an excuse to be distant, cold, angry and resentful, what the roots of offended-ness are, and strategies to release feeling offended, as well as live, work, and play more productively, effectively and with more joy!
As for this week, let’s simply raise your awareness around feeling offended. Think of the last time you felt offended. Where did you feel it in your body? Clinched jaw, tight fists, anxious shoulders up around your ears, stomach ache? Feeling offended not only impacts your emotions, but your body as well.
So what does being offended feel like? Feeling offended is destructive in nature and is a fruitless emotion. It feels heavy; you’re frustrated, angry, irritable, and resentful. Indulging in being offended is ultimately a way to express a belief in your own powerlessness. Which in reality is a fabrication, you have more personal power available to you than you could every possible use.
Tune in next week for examples of how people are “easily offended”!
Have a fabulous week!
