Many women say the job interview is the most intimidating part of the job search.  It certainly can feel nerve-wracking when you’re in the “hot seat” and need to perform at the top of your game. 

I’ve coached hundreds of professional women through this process.  Specifically, I help them build strategies to reduce anxiety so they can present themselves as a top-notch candidate in the face-to-face interview. 

I’m often asked what one should bring to the job interview.  In addition to extra copies of your resume and cover letter (on high quality paper), there are four things you should always bring with you: 

• Letters of Recommendation  (August 4th blog)
• Work Samples  (August 11th blog)
• List of References  (August 18th blog)
• List of Questions  (this week’s blog)
   

This week, let’s focus on the list of questions you should bring with you to the job interview. 

Towards the end of the meeting, most interviewers ask the candidate if they have any questions.  You want to come prepared with insightful questions to pose at this moment. 

The purpose of the questions you ask in the first job interview is to further your candidacy for the position you’re interviewing for.  The questions you come prepared with will show you’ve done your research on the organization. 

For example, you could formulate a question such as:

   “I have reviewed the company’s website and I see that one of the strategic    initiatives for the upcoming fiscal year is XYZ.  Can you tell me more about the goals and objectives of this program?”

This question conveys the message that you carefully do your homework and have taken the time to thoroughly research the organization.  Come prepared with five of these well-crafted questions.  Prepare more than enough because most likely, some of them will be answered in the course of the conversation.  You want to be sure you have a few questions to pose that have not already been covered by the end of the interview.
