Part 4:  Identify and Prioritize Your Main Objectives

The first step in developing your negotiation strategy is to identify and prioritize your objectives.  In addition to salary, there are lots of other elements of the offer package you can negotiate for.

Here are some of the additional items you can negotiate for in addition to higher pay: (more…)

Part 3: Why Women Don’t Negotiate

There are a whole host of reasons women choose not to negotiate upon receiving a salary offer. Most of these reasons can be summed up by the fact that women would rather avoid a conversation they feel might be uncomfortable.

Most women are comfortable negotiate and advocate on behalf of others – their children, spouse, parent, sibling, friend, co-worker, etc. But when it comes to assertively asking for what they want for themselves, they often shy away and shrink into the shadows. (more…)

Part 2:  You are Expected to Negotiate

It’s important to keep in mind that when you are offered a new job, it is fully expected you will negotiate the salary.  This is precisely why the initial salary you’re offered is usually below what the company actually expects to pay you.  By way of example, I’ll share the story of the first time I negotiated salary - or more accurately – didn’t negotiate salary.  (more…)

Unfortunately, a lack of negotiation skills and discomfort with negotiating in general are key factors holding women back in both their careers and personal lives.

Consider these facts:

• Men are more than five times more likely to negotiate a first salary than women
• Women still only earn 77 cents to every man’s dollar - That means we take home $77 for every $100 a man takes home
• By not negotiating a first salary, women stand to lose more than a half a million dollars by age 60
Part 1:  Don’t Let Resentments Fester

When women neglect to negotiate salary, they often regret it later.  This can lead to discontentment and even resentment on the job.  Consider the following story of one of my clients.  (more…)

What to Bring to Job Interviews: Part 4

August 24th, 2008
Maret McCoy

Many women say the job interview is the most intimidating part of the job search.  It certainly can feel nerve-wracking when you’re in the “hot seat” and need to perform at the top of your game.

I’ve coached hundreds of professional women through this process.  Specifically, I help them build strategies to reduce anxiety so they can present themselves as a top-notch candidate in the face-to-face interview.

I’m often asked what one should bring to the job interview.  In addition to extra copies of your resume and cover letter (on high quality paper), there are four things you should always bring with you:

  • Letters of Recommendation  (August 4th blog)
  • Work Samples  (August 11th blog)
  • List of References  (August 18th blog)
  • List of Questions  (this week’s blog)

This week, let’s focus on the list of questions you should bring with you to the job interview.

Towards the end of the meeting, most interviewers ask the candidate if they have any questions.  You want to come prepared with insightful questions to pose at this moment.

The purpose of the questions you ask in the first job interview is to further your candidacy for the position you’re interviewing for.  The questions you come prepared with will show you’ve done your research on the organization.

For example, you could formulate a question such as:

“I have reviewed the company’s website and I see that one of the strategic    initiatives for the upcoming fiscal year is XYZ.  Can you tell me more about the goals and objectives of this program?”

This question conveys the message that you carefully do your homework and have taken the time to thoroughly research the organization.  Come prepared with five of these well-crafted questions.  Prepare more than enough because most likely, some of them will be answered in the course of the conversation.  You want to be sure you have a few questions to pose that have not already been covered by the end of the interview.

In the September editions of my blog, which will begin next Monday, September 1st,
I’ll provide more job interview success tips and techniques.  Please check back this upcoming Monday.

Until next week - Here’s to your continued success!
