Here’s to TOTALLY ROCKIN HEROES

September 2nd, 2008
Susan Kim

We have some friends in town who just completed what’s called a Channel Swim. If you’re not familiar with this, it is an open water swim where you start from one island and swim to another. In this case it is the Maui Channel Swim, an event that starts from the island of Lanai and finishes on Maui. The distance is about 9 miles and our friends are on a team of six who are swimming as a relay.

Some people think they’re CRAZY!
I think they’re AMAZING!

Based on my own experience with open water swimming - it is NOT easy.
You have to contend with the waves, the current, the wind and the depth (which personally freaks me out!). And then there are the critters (like sharks) that you hope won’t come up from under you and say “hello.”

Swimming the Channel is not only a physical challenge, it is definitely a MENTAL one as well.

Watching the Olympics last month, I saw this phenomenon happening again and again. . .

So this post is simply to say “You ROCK!”
To anyone that has faced their fear and beat it.
To anyone that has beaten the odds.
To anyone that has done something that many others are unwilling to do.
To anyone that has been called crazy and persevered.
To anyone that has overcome a physical challenge with mental strength.

You TOTALLY ROCK!
You’re a HERO!
And an INSPIRATION.

With Thanks,
Susan

“You and I do not see things as they are. We see things as WE are” -Herb Cohen

It all started with a perfectly innocent question from my husband. “Honey, can we compare our calendars, I have some things I want to schedule and I’d like your input?” Happily I agreed and pulled my chair up to engage in the conversation. (more…)

Salary Negotiation

August 31st, 2008
Maret McCoy

Unfortunately, a lack of negotiation skills and discomfort with negotiating in general are key factors holding women back in both their careers and personal lives.

Consider these facts:

• Men are more than five times more likely to negotiate a first salary than women
• Women still only earn 77 cents to every man’s dollar - That means we take home $77 for every $100 a man takes home
• By not negotiating a first salary, women stand to lose more than a half a million dollars by age 60
Part 1:  Don’t Let Resentments Fester

When women neglect to negotiate salary, they often regret it later.  This can lead to discontentment and even resentment on the job.  Consider the following story of one of my clients.  (more…)

China Dolls - Ugly is More than Skin Deep

August 29th, 2008

There are some expressions that seem to float timelessly and effortlessly through society. One of these is, “pretty as a china doll.”  Recently we’ve had to stop, however, and ask ourselves, “Just what does that really mean?”

Love the Labor

As we move to the close of the summer and the celebration of Labor Day, there is a swirl of emotions surrounding this weekend of transition.  On one hand, we are moved with a wave of melancholy over the ending of yet another season of shorts and sandals, pool-side parties and warm care-free days.  On the other hand, we are invigorated by the changing season and the fresh new beginnings that is synonymous with fall schedules. Critical Steps to Get Love Right - Take Action!

August 26th, 2008
Amy Schoen

Last week we discussed setting a goal for yourself of meeting your romantic life partner and creating a plan of action.  Being intentional about what to do and pointing yourself in the right direction is essential.   However, it’s more important to TAKE ACTION!  Sitting around at home and wishing for stuff to happen won’t really help you.

What is your purpose?

For this question, I want you to get outside of yourself and your immediate surroundings and think REALLY BIG. If you were to spend your days advocating for others, who would you advocate for?
