I was at a Bela Fleck concert a couple of weeks ago to enjoy his cool style of jazz/bluegrass banjo playing. Bela and the Flecktones first opened with one of their classic favorites, “Kaleidoscope” (Video of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones performing Kaleidoscope) and then went right into their rendition of the Linus and Lucy Christmas song, a tune that can get anyone tapping their toes. On this month’s tele-class a gentleman got on the call and asked me how to leave a relationship of several months.  He mentioned that he was dating a recently divorced single mother with kids and he did not see himself with kids.  He must have known this about himself before going into the relationship. Last year I spent half of the year in Hawaii. I know that the gorgeous sunsets, the vast Pacific, the emerald mountains and the amazing rainbows I saw each and every day allowed me to pause and reflect on the amazing beauty of the islands. Recently, one of my clients called me — she was hugely upset. Her eight-year-old daughter was being tested for diabetes. And while my client (and her spouse) have struggled with their weight for years, the IDEA that their little girl might be overweight AND SICK was horrifying. As I mentored her through the discussion, and helped her to see that she wasn’t paralyzed — she finally felt safe enough to admit that her beautiful little daughter was twenty-three pounds overweight.
